Welcome to Andra Gillespie’s webpage! Andra is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Her research and course offerings include political participation and racial and ethnic politics generally; however, she devotes most of her attention to studying “post-racial” African American leadership.
Andra is the editor of and contributor to Whose Black Politics? Cases in Post-Racial Black Leadership and the author of The New Black Politician: Cory Booker, Newark, and Post-Racial America. In addition, Andra provides political commentary to numerous local and national media outlets (print, radio and television), contributes online media commentary, and has published op-ed pieces in well-respected publications.
In addition to her scholarly work, Andra also maintains an active public scholarship presence. Her op-ed pieces have appeared in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Washington Post, and Politico, and she is a contributor to Politico.com’s Arena. In addition, she has provided television and radio commentary on NPR, CNN, FamilyNet and on the local ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and PBS affiliates in metro Atlanta.
Andra maintains an active research agenda. Her primary areas of inquiry are in African American politics, particularly African American leadership. She also has secondary research interests in Black-Latino political relationships, political participation, and religion and politics.
